This is my first time responding to a post, so if I didn't do it right, I apologize.  I have built several models from scratch, that included windows and doors.  Mine were made from plastic sheet, with 1 piece being the textured piece (siding, brick, etc.) and the other being a plain sheet for strength.  After cutting out the openings on the textured piece, glue it to a plain sheet but don't glue too near the openings.  Scribe around the opening lightly.  Measure out from that scribed line 1/8 inch all the way around, and then cut it out.  Now you have a backing piece that will fit precisely in that opening.  Label them so you can match them up later.  Using the scribed lines as a guide, build the window anyway you like using various plastic strips.  The last part is to cut out the solid sheet in the window openings.  Having the strip pieces in place makes cutting the solid part easier and less prone to breakage.  Yes, it can be very tedious and time consuming, but it is well worth it.  I have scratch built many structures and found this way works the best.  Sadly, I have not built anything in about 15 years.  With the walls and windows still separate you can paint them without worrying about masking.  Hope this makes sense.

Subject: Scratch building

I want to scratch build a switch tower like Hager or Tug etc. I can?t find windows of the right dimensions or design. I have also tried to cut holes for the windows and broke the narrow area between them. How have others overcome these barriers?
