In addition to to the sound problem, adding whiskers, or some other kind of sliding connections, would add four addition contact points in the circuit to your locomotive. While fine in theory, these kinds of connections are very unreliable. They're fragile, get dirty, tarnished, bent out of adjustment, and hard to repair. I don't recommend it.

A daisy chained ground wire to half the rails, and single wires from the rest, to a rotary, multi-position selector switch is not that difficult to do, and it should work well for a long, long time. Unfortunately you still need wipers for the turntable bridge, unless you have some fancy bearings.
