The auxiliary tender released with the old Bachmann J (and the Bachmann Plus J) was correct for the excursion aux tenders, since it was model of the aux cut down from the L&N Emma tenders. So far as I know, it is out of production, but you can pick one up now and then at a show or on ebay. Don't know where you would find drawings, since N&W did not do the conversions. (I think the Southern steam program did at least one conversion at Irondale, and one of them was probably converted by L&N as a diesel fuel transporter.)The Auxillary tender released with the Specruum J (in current production) is a very correct model of the Aux tenders which N&W used when steam was in service (pre 1960), and is thus not correct for the excursion aux tenders. The 611 and 1218 each had their own aux in excursion service, appropriately painted in each case (with slight detail differences). From photos, it appears that they were sometimes swapped.
Excursion 611 had some openings in the skyline casing covered which were open on the in service J's. It also had twin sealed bean headlight, rather than one bulb and reflector which J's used when in regular service.. The boards on the 1218 tender date from its in service time. I am not sure about the 611. Photos should tell you. Jim Nichols

Subject: Research for G scale

My research is going well on the project for producing large scale N&W A class and J class locomotives. We are discussing what versions of the locomotives to do. So far we are have discussed the in-service and excursion versions of #611 and #1218. Can the list members please provide some insight to the following questions. Other loco numbers being considered 610, 612, 613, 1200, 1210, 1217 and 12 42.

What are some of the differences between the in-service and excursion version of #611?

What are some of the differences between the in-service and excursion version of #1218?

Did both 611 and 1218 use the boards on the tender coal bunker? Was this for in-service or excursion service only?

The Bachmann auxiliary tender that originally came out with their HO J class, is it an accurate representation of the auxiliary tender 611 used? If not are there drawings available for aux tender used in excursion service?

Did 1218 and 611 use the same aux tender or did they each have their own?

Thanks for your input.
