Maybe just like today NTSB does not investigate all accidents . Also boiler explosions are not found in those reports but are available maybe Harry will explain that.

Rick's note reminded me that when Bob Bowers and I were writing the caboose book for the Society, I traveled to the ICC Library in Washington, DC several times for research. At that time my focus was on building a roster of the earliest cabooses and the ICC Library contained an extensive collection of the Official Railway Equipment Registers. I didn't really have time to browse the rest of the collection but it was extensive. I think the information Rick received is probably correct; as I understand it, some material was shipped to a University (I think in Colorado but might be wrong); one can only hope that there is material that just hasn't been scanned yet, but I would hold my breath.

I brought this question up to someone who researched the ICC accident files. The answer I got is that a lot of the files were thrown out with the closure of the ICC, and what remains is what is available on-line. One of my theories was that accidents with no fatalities were not in the files, but that proved not to be true. There are minor accidents as well as horrendous accidents in the files. It is odd that some years are extensive and some years show few accidents, or that some railroads had no accidents. That makes no sense.

I have seen the accident reports on the ICC site for the N&W. I have seen photos of accidents that are not on the ICC listings. My 2 questions are, why were some listed and some not? Is there a company listing of all the accidents that were on the N&W?
