Subject: Westbound Coal in Roanoke

There was one instance when coal was hauled westbound on the N&W.Many in the Tidewater area may recall the mountains of coal at theVEPCO plant near Bridge #7.  VEPCO (now Domino Energy) reloadedthe coal in hoppers and transferred it to another plant. Coal rates werethen regulated and generally based on mine-to-market movement.  VEPCO paid a hefty  price to transfer the coal.
Before coal was transferred from a mine on CSX  to Kopperston  by conveyor,Hyco coal was routed CSX to Glasgow, then N&W.  The unit trains went into ShaffersCrossing and the engines and caboose swapped ends.  Then a brake test,  Seemslike that practice continues for coal originating in Pennsylvania. Many-a-year, RoanokeTerminal Superintendent (and NWHS member) the late "Crank" Kinzell sought fundsto construct a connection from the Shenandoah Division near the Orange Avenueoverhead bridge to the Norfolk Division near Furnace Crossing. No more swapping ends,no more brake tests, Terminal overtime ?  Maybe.  N&W never approved the funding.
