N&W and Southern thru passenger service

For several weeks during February and March 1950, during a coal strike,
Southern diesels ran through on the N&W-Southern joint passenger trains
(17-18, 41-42, 45-46) between Monroe and Bristol (see RAILS REMEMBERED, Vol.
3, p. 491).

Around May 1953, the Southern's coaling station at Monroe was torn down (see
"The Arrow," Vol. 27, No. 2, p. 28, Chapter 73 of RAILS REMEMBERED). After
that time and until the end of N&W steam operation on the joint trains,
engines were dispatched from Roanoke to Monroe and back with a sufficient
amount of coal to make the roundtrip. They were not serviced at Kinney.
