You're correct - there is a method of passing opposing trains  when
both have more cars (or car lengths) than the siding will  hold.  A
conductor long ago sketched out the procedure for me, but I  can
remember only the first two maneuvers.
 
1- The train taking siding leaves the overflow on the main line  and
     pulls into the  siding. 
 
2- The train holding the main track pulls ahead, couples to the  over-
     flow left on the main  track.
 
Maybe Jimmy Lisle or Abe Burnette know the rest.
