IMPORTANT CHANGE
N. & W. to Divide Road Into Two General Divisions
The organization of the Norfolk & Western has been amended so as to
provide for a vice-president and general manager and a vice-president and
traffic managers, the same to become effective July 1. Provision also has
been made for a division of the system into two general divisions, one east
of Bluefield and the other west.
Under the amended organization N. D. Maher, present general manager,
will become vice-president and general manager, and T. S. Davant, present
freight traffic manager, vice-president and traffic manager.
Mr. Maher entered railroad server in 1871, on surveys and construction
of the Pittsburg, Virginia & Charleston Railway in Pennsylvania; was
afterward in various positions in the Pennsylvania Railroad service; came
to Roanoke June 1st 1883, and entered the service of the Norfolk & Western;
has since been superintendent of the Pocahontas Division from 1890 to 1901;
was general superintendent, Seaboard Air Line railway from June 1901 to
January 1903; returned to the Norfolk & Western as general superintendent
January 3rd, 1903; was appointed general manager February 1st, 1904, and
vice-president and general manager as above.
Mr. Davant entered railroad service in 1865; has occupied various
positions on different lines in North and South Carolina and Tennessee, and
came to the service of the Norfolk & Western May 1st, 1902, as general
freight agent; was appointed freight traffic manager July 15th, 1903, and
vice-president and traffic manager as above.
