N. & W. CUT-OFF

Will Likely Cut Radford Out New River Division

   The little town of Dublin is elated and Radford correspondingly
depressed by the rumor that the Norfolk & Western proposes to put in a cut
off west of Radford and all through trains, instead of going down to Walton
and then up by Radford and West Radford, will cut out that town entirely
and not cross the New River.
   Formerly all trains either from the west or the north came through
Radford. There were two bridges over New River, the one going to Bristol
and the other to Bluefield. When the coal traffic reached such tremendous
proportions, the Norfolk & Western extended the track from Bluefield down
to Walton, cutting out Radford. Passenger trains are now run to Walton and
backed up to Radford. Trains from Bluefield to Bristol are forced to run to
Walton and then back to Radford. The new arrangement will not make it
necessary to run these trains to Walton and it is estimated will be a
saving of at least an hour in the time from Columbus to Bristol. Just where
the cut off will tap the New River road is not known bit it is pretty well
settled that Dublin will be the junction point on the mail line between
Radford and Bristol.
