Gee, Bill, I don't know how Auntie's Clothes Line (ACL) did it. There
was that super sized slow order of 40 MPH across the GREAT (?)
Pee Dee River viaduct, that 2 degree corkscrew of a curve at
Contentnea and that awful 0.8% climb to the apex of the ACL at
Natal (199 feet). The twin V-12's in the "Purple People Eaters" must
have been firing at 14 times a second to accomplish that run.

Speaking of statistics, the Richmond District suffered quite a tragedy
in December, 1943 when there was a side collision between No. 91
and No. 8 north of Buie. Seventy one people died. N&W never had
an accident between Bristol and Roanoke that took that many
lives. Nor between Bluefield and Norton. Nor between Pulaski and
Galax. Nor between Lynchburg and Durham. And on, and on, and on.
