I start with the old Lifelike 100 ton hopper. I shorten it, lower the top rail, and replace some ribs. A lot of work, but the slope sheets are the right angle, and the side sill is the right height. The hoppers themselves are not as deep as they should be, but so far nobody has noticed The Lifelike underframe has to be reworked. I suppose there are other 100 ton models that would be suitable for this kitbash, but the old Lifelike is the only one I have used.

Is there a good starting point model for doing one of these cars?

Good call on H10. The spotting difference is the angle of the slope sheet and of the discharge bay are different, on the ends of the car.
