The problem with O scalers is that they are all over the place with most not willing to pay for high quality products. You get what you are willing to pay for like Atlas China drives, less lighting features, and less road specific details like Sunset 3rd rail oversize class light with only white - not tricolor lights, wrong paint colors in locomotives or compromised or omitted road specific details and ex MTH inaccurate models. Because O scalers settle for less, our models are not the high standards of what is offered in HO. All I hear from O scalers is "I am not paying this," "I don't care if the model is accurate as long it looks good from 10 feet away," "I am Happy with the 3rail mentality." Therefore, O scale will never have mass produced models of the high quality of HO. The aftermarket decals by Microscale Decals are mostly gone, as are the detail parts. Yes, you can 3D print if you pay someone or learn to do it yourself if you're not too old. Yes, O scale is thriving, but at a subpar level to other scales. Just what I am observing, and O scale will always be the scale of "do it yourself or do without."

I'm much closer to Brian's line of thinking, However. Some of the newest scale models are so detailed they can almost not be handled. But what do I know, I am turning into "old man yells at clouds." The Proto 2000 GP9's were nearly the perfect blend of good looks and superb running for my tastes. The only thing missing from them is today's electronics. I am really impressed with the new Blunami stuff. I hope the entire industry moves in that direction.

I'm a mix of both but am at a point where I would prefer "contest" level quality when possible, especially if I'm purchasing something that's read-to-run. I think as a hobby we've moved past the Athearn blue box kit with 173 different available road names. 

Which I understand there are concessions to be made, and in the end the goal for the society is to make money, but if we're offering a model I think there's an assumption that the model is fairly accurate. We are a historical society after all.
