N&W CF project (was N&W RPOs M1)

Thanks, for the words of encouragement on the M1 car. It it purely driven
by my desire not to spend $800 on a Div Point car. (although once I have
50+ hours into modeling it, $800 will seem like a bargain)

I plan to do this project sooner than later, but it won't be for a little
while. Jim Cochran and I are in the middle of a large caboose project. I'm
3d modeling an interior for brass cabins, and attempting to fit space for
electronics, in the process. That's where Jim the electronics guru comes
in. We hope to create a well-hidden, track-powered electronics package that
provides smooth, constant LED interior lighting. The goal is for the LEDs
to stay lit for as long as possible; perhaps 15-30 minutes. I also need to
thank Ken Miller for a floorplan blueprint, and Matt Goodman & Abe Burnett
for their support, advice, and reference pictures.

This 3d render view shows the model as it is approaching completion. I am
debating the value of adding cross walls behind the cupola seats on which I
can mount the air brake valve and air brake gauge. I'm not sure how visible
they will be when added, which will determine my interest.  I also need to
add handrails up into the cupola from below, as well as the handrail that
was mounted near the ceiling and ran lengthwise in the car for holding one
when climbing down. This is where Abe hit his head often in the dark, and I
posit this may be the cause of his talking about turnips in so many emails.

when printed, it fits inside the brass car body, replacing the cross struts
that the underbody mounts to.
THESE WONT WORK WITH OVERLAND  - for now, I may get around to that, as I
have a couple. But they are painted, so I am less interested in mucking
around with them and having to repaint.

This is a damaged test car, which allowed me to desolder the brackets
without fear of ruining a good model. I will probably fix this one
eventually, too. You can see below that they used a ton of solder when
assembling the car. Even my desoldering copper wick couldn't get it all
cleaned up very well, so I just ground it out with a tungsten carbide
carving bit in my Dremel. The solder comes away quickly and it's easy to
stop at the brass. I did overheat one corner of the car while grinding away
blobs of solder in the interior corners and the corner came de-soldered. I
will have to be aware of this on future cars and remember to use a damp
towel to keep the car cool when grinding.

Here's an example of the progression of test prints. the one on right is
prior to modeling all the bunks.
The interior on the left is before Abe told me he never saw a cab in this
configuration (hey, I built it to the blueprints Ken Miller sent me!) Turns
out the blueprints we started with were for pre-1924 cars, so there went
another evening of modifications. There are not yet lanterns modeled. there
were two kerosene lanterns; one over the sink and one on the opposite end
of the cab, on the opposite car side, but it was attached to the cupola
seat wall, not the cabin outer wall.
The cab on the top.... well that's a whole new interior to make. Hopefully,
I will be better/more efficient by the time I get to these cars.

The three painted cabs are AMB kits, and Matt has a couple of his AMB's
built with removable floors, so I am also going to make some kits for AMB
that will not include walls or floors, and will just include seats and
bunks and kitchen, so you can glue them in as individual pieces.

So that's where things stand. This is going slowly. I hope to have this
whole project wrapped up within the next 3 months (paint included). I only
work on it a handful of hours each week.
When I get this done, I may be ready to start on M1.
