end of track

I used the drawing in the standards book to make one of those cinder
end of track stops on my HO scale layout. It's at the stub end of a
track used to spot hoppers for a mainline coaling tower. Like you I
couldn't find photographs, so I just used the drawing as a guide and
started pouring cinders.

David, based on that drawing, I envision exactly what you are
describing. Think of the gravel trap just outside of the turns on a
road course. You run into that loose stuff and you slow down fast
(speaking from experience there!).
Based on the description on the drawing, these were probably intended
for light traffic situations. I’m envisioning the tail end of a
lightly used team track. Just speculation, of course.

Does anyone know of a photo of the cinder end of track? I have a
team track on my home layout that would be perfect for this, but I
don’t know what that looks like IRL. I could just bury it, but is
that right (aka you can’t really see any rail or ties)? Thanks,
David Baker

Jim, I checked the N&W standards boon in dad’s collection, but
didn’t find any steel bumpers. Perhaps because they were purchased
from a vendor as opposed constructing them themselves?
I did find a drawing for a concrete bumper dated 1917 and a cinder
car stop dated 1918 - both attached.

Bill, Thanks for the information. Looks like it is spot on. I
found an excellent modeling article on them here:

Looks like one of the Hayes bumpers. A few photos can be seen at . .
