Mike; I'm almost embarrassed to suggest this, because I've seen your work
and you're a few levels ahead of me.  However, when I scratchbuild I was
taught to cut large (or in the case of holes cut small)and sand to the
exact dimension.  I had the same problem with the thin areas breaking.  I
found that clamping the piece in a vise and sanding (using an emery board
in the picture that I hope I attached)the opening as necessary worked.
Also when I put this in a clinic one of the even older guys told me that
this also gave me better control because I could use both hands on the
emery board.

We going to get pictures of your tower in progress or a clinic?
