Thanks Todd. That’s great to know. I’d like to do one in the Claytor scheme also. Now I have to decide whether to go with undec or modify a decorated one. With some patience, the decorated one might be easier for me.

Also I forgot to mention - after putting on new decals, I found I can brush on (or airbrush) Tamiya X-35 semi gloss clear paint over the decals. It seals the decals and I think does a good job blending the finish with the Scaletrains factory finish. Then it’s on to weathering!

Phil and all,

Yes, there is an undecorated N&W version and it will have the tri-clasp side frames. The ST item numbers are SXT 31812 and SXT 31813. Here is a link to the artwork:

I have also heard that the solvaset and paper towel method of removing numbers works well on the Scale Trains models. I will likely do such on one of my units and apply the Claytor scheme. Thanks for the heads up on the number boards.

Nice.

Would the undec have the right truck frames for N&W? If not, I found on their C39-8 locos, it wasn’t too difficult to remove cab numbers on their models using paper towel soaked in Walthers Solvaset, then use decals to renumber them. Just cut the paper towel big enough to cover the graphic you’re removing. It takes about 15-20 minutes of good soaking to then carefully rub off the old number without damaging the paint. Not sure about removing the “NW” to replace it with other graphics. That’s a lot more to remove. That’s when I break out the airbrush to paint out the old logo.

Scaletrains number boards pop out fairly easily by prying it off with an Xacto knife (held on with rubber cement?). The BACK of the number boards have the graphics on them. After cleaning off the back of the number boards with Solvaset, I used Shellscale decals on the front of them to get new number boards that light up nicely.

The society is currently discussing a pre-order method through the society or purchasing this model as inventory for the Commissary It all depends on the Scale Trains ordering deadline which will likely be in February. Shane Wilson of Scale Trains will advise me of the deadline later this evening.

Also, the high hood version is available as undecorated for those that wish to apply the NS schemes or N&W Claytor scheme (F8). https://www.scaletrains.com/product/rivet-counter-ho-scale-emd-sd40-2-undecorated-r6/

  I will advise ASAP!

Just got this from Scale Trains. I am not an HO modeler, but thought I would pass this on.
