I couldn’t agree more with Jim. Being interested in collecting brass and trying to specify accurate paint and lettering for unpainted models, I cannot emphasize how cool it is to find authentic photos of prototypes taken from several vantages. It’s so depressing to only be able to find ¾ front views of locos or rolling stock, when it would have been possible to get full-on side and front views, and a close-up shot of the builder’s plate(s). Looking at the www, you might get the impression that steam locos didn’t have rears. How much would modelers give today to have photos of tender back lettering for every instance (or at least class) of loco, for every lettering era—and especially in the case of ATSF, N&W, and PRR, where the tender road numbers were independent of the loco road numbers, and where tender swaps occurred. How cool would it be to have legible photos of all the tiny lettering on reversing gear and other appliances, air tanks, ATC boxes, passenger car underbodies, truck sideframes, etc, for the models we want to build?

I’ve attached 3 photos that somebody with extraordinary presence of mind took of an ATSF 1050-Class Prairie. I did the decals for each of these idiosyncratic markings, and put them on my model of this class—hugely satisfying!

I get that film and development was expensive back in the day. But with digital photography and memory going for <$5 per gigabyte, there is NO EXCUSE for failing to record these details today. Snap that shutter 40 times rather than once!

And, thank everyone for snapping the shots you DID, back in the day, and for sharing them today!

Ed … taking the pic is more important than the quality. Many folks never bothered to record what was in front of them. Granted, photography isn’t “for everyone” but those of us who often look at live thru a viewfinder now have supporting information to pass on to others and to correct our failing memories. Thank YOU for taking the time to record this action (in between beers!).

As to E8A's in freight service on the RF&P -

When I was attending Randolph-Macon College (more accurately partying too much during) during 1970 -72, I became serious about taking railroad pictures. (The RF&P went through the campus). E-8s' were regularly in freight service. I found a shot I did from 1972 with an old Kodak 35mm camera and High Speed Ektachrome film. Its coming southbound through downtown Ashland, VA - E8A 1007 leading either a GP35 or GP40 with an FP7A trailing. A pretty darn poor quality shot but one you'll never get again.

Southern did this … usually an E-7 or E-8 and either F-3a or FP-7. Fairly common practice in the ‘60s. Attached is a pic of an E-7 with FP-7 in 1966 (I think Train 42 was the northbound Pelican) and a pic of another northbound at Bristol about to hand off to the N&W. The 2nd unit is an F-7. I also have a pic of the Crescent in Mississippi with 3 E-8s and an FP-7 as 2nd unit.

Didn’t RF&P run E-8s in freight service lashups on an irregular basis?

Jack is currently doing an “E and F Combo” project, for RR’s that ran E-Units and F-Units together regularly. Maybe if RF&P used this practice, he would include them in his thinking.

Can anybody document such practice?

A few years ago, Jack Vansworth at the Division Point was considering importing a series of E-8A diesels in brass. I asked him about the possibility of importing the RF&P leased version in two road numbers. He replied that if he "probably" went ahead with the E-8A project that he would "probably" do the leased RF&Ps. That was several years ago and don't even know if the E-8A project is still on Jack's agenda.

The N&W E-units in ACL and/or RF&P colors were very poor sellers. The society had a hard time getting rid of them.

Is there any chance the Society could re-issue the N&W E-units in ACL and/or RF&P colors using Walthers models in HO? There seemed to be popular and I'm sure others would like them too.
