Thanks Jim for the confirmation that these cars were delivered in Pennsy Red/Tuscan as I mentioned in my earlier email on this matter. That saved me a lot a trouble having to go back through my files looking for the original data source which I suspect was Pullman based. I’m certain that I don’t have any repainting dates for these cars into N&W Tuscan scheme which presumably would be railroad based other than the transition to the Pevler Blue scheme, but then that era is outside of my modeling focus.

However for the modellers with the funds to purchase one of these UTI N&W cars the dilemma possibly now exists as to which ‘Tuscan’ UTI has planned for UTI 1072-3 McDowell County given that their marketing thrust so far appears to be mainly for the Pevler Blue painted cars. Some clarification here would definitely be helpful here by UTI for if they were repainted as Marty suggests using N&W Tuscan (subject to confirmation as noted in my next sentence) it now adds an extra color into the mix (pun intended)! Does anyone know if the car records as held in the N&WHS care throw any light on this issue since it my understanding that UTI usually takes considerable care with their data packs provided to the Korean builder?

Any thots?

Clive Riley.

The Rivarossi/AHM car is not correct, as the prototype is ACF rather than Pullman Standard. There is one aisle window too many. BTW: the County cars were delivered in Pennsy red. I saw them. It is possible that they later got N&W Tuscan, but the original paint was Pennsy.

For reference, here are photos of one of my Rivarossi N&W 10-6 Pullmans, "Virginia Polytechnic Institute". Both sides of the car are shown.

While the N&W S2s were given Pennsy style striping, every picture and video I have seen of the cars still shows the N&W tuscan red, not the PRR brownish-maroon.

In HO, Walthers has also offered a 4140 10-6, although I don't know why they have never offered it in N&W other than N&W not being on their "playlist" for passenger cars. For what it's worth, the old Rivarossi/AHM 10-6 is also a 4140, so there are plenty of lower-priced alternatives out there.

Besides, these cars have already been produced some 20 years ago in brass by Oriental Models, admittedly as a PRR car which was identical, but the twist is that the N&W cars were painted in PRR Tuscan as opposed to N&W Tuscan to the best of my knowledge. They are somewhat hard to locate in model form as such, however the Oriental Models import would presumably provide a ‘cost effective’ alternative since this model run didn’t have interiors fitted nor factory paint applied etc all of which tends to push prices upwards when taken into consideration with the usual inflation seen in prices for ‘new’ runs of late. Mind you this proposed release of individual cars is subject to adequate reservations being received for each in order to be considered viable, so one really needs to think seriously as to the paint scheme that you are interested in or whether to run with the undecorated version that UTI has announced at UTI 1072-4 and then have that painted to ones’ taste later should the painted cars fail to get the requisite reservations. Almost a steam or diesel era decision!

No one to date has produced this version despite the efforts by NKP Car Co. and The Coach Yard in producing other variants of the same basic plan number. One day perhaps - but new production of heavyweights are few and far between these days except for mainly the PRR/NYC/UP/D&RGW modellers but one can hope I suppose.
