J 602 booster engine

Thank you Jimmy! While the majority of the details are obscured by the streamlining as pointed out by Rev. Nichols, there are some piping elements that are still visible, and while subtle, might be fun to add, just to be different. I also think there is a casting from PSC that could be mated to the trailing truck to represent the booster unit. I haven't checked to see if it is the correct model type designation or not, but it's got to be pretty close.

While on the topic of boosters, I've seen applications for tender truck boosters that were applied to both Y2 and Y3 class engines for yard service. Some are listed as Franklin boosters and some as Bethlehem, but I haven't yet been able to determine the difference visually. We're they the same product that just changed hands from one company ownership to another, or were they substantially different systems?

(PSC had a Franklin tender booster truck in their catalog, but I can find no evidence of a bethlehem booster ever being produced in model form, if they are indeed a different product in some way.)

Thanks to all who are helping with my education on this topic!

Brent

Jimmy:

Thank you for posting the link to the C-2 Booster treatise. Very interesting!

Does anybody know of any boiler design references or formula guidelines that the later US steam designers? I'd be interested in N&W's especially, but any of Paul Kiefer's (NYC) or Altoona Works' (PRR) later design guidelines would be fascinating! I'm specifically interested in these people's thinking about ratio of flue length to diameter, ratio of tube dia to flue dia, single-pass vs multi-pass superheater configurations, combustion chamber length considerations, etc.

Brent,
Use the following links from the N&W Archives to find what you want about the booster on the Class J:

To learn more about the booster engine operated use the following link. It is a bvig file so wait for it to load:
