Larry, my tattered memory did not recall it was in MR.  I think you're referring to an well done article by John Munson, taking two Athearn offset quads and doing a battleship gon.  There is a thought among the faithful that Steve Funaro(Funaro & Camerlengo) used that article as a base for a master for the first incarnation of the battleship gon that he did.  Also, somewhere in my records, there's a reference that John Paton also used two Athearn offset quads to do the C&O battleship gon.  Yes, I am going to mention those.   And, Larry, are you the same Larry Smith (I think I've encountered two on these lists)who a)did the article on the VGN boxcars?? Which article I have cited many times in my Virginian modeling clinic, b)once gave me suggestions as to what to do with that miserable drive on the NJCB AE? Thanks again for either or both.  How bout showing up at a convention or October get together some time? Frank Bongiovanni   "To Steal From One Person Is Plagarism; To Steal From Many is Research"; William Mizner

Well, first of all, thank you guys who sent the article on scratchbuilding a VGN gon in O scale.  Great list: one man mentions the article, one sends the site, and two then send the article.  Thanks very much; it will be mentioned in the clinic.   Now, Eric.  First, thanks for the research job.  Impressive work.  Since the clinic is this Friday, fortunately I do have the books you mentioned on the shelf, and I've been wearing them out over the last few years.  This clinic has been in use for about 6 years, but each time i give it I am given more information; I'd like to think that the clinic gets better.  And partly because of the origina premise that we started with, and partly because of time, I'm just covering gons.  The PRR, N&W, and B&O hoppers are not part of the discussion; spoiler alert: I do mention the one PRR monster gon.  I onlhy have one hour for the clinic; now the hoppers could well get discussed over beverages this coming weekend.  And I was aware of the PRR and N&W hoppers, but I hadn't noticed the B&O.  And the Karig, Dow, and Teichmoller books are invaluable.  And all are getting pricey unless you're lucky.   The situation for models, RTR and kits, is kind of sad.  And, subtle hint, the clinic is penciled in again for the Virginian get together this October. Thanks again all of you

The article is in vol 8 issue 3 of O Scale Trains, May/June 2009, pages 36-39.

There is an article in a past O Scale Trains magazine on how to build a Virginian Railway Battleship Gondola out of styrene. Can't remember which volume and issue off the top of my head but O Scale Trains has PDF files of past issues on their website for free.

Frank Yes, in O scale a string of 15 gons would be impressive and expensive at around $300 per car-if you can find them....I have a friend who has two of them and they have been drooled on. Jim  -----Original Message-----

Dave ; thanks you.   Jim, Jim: thank you guys, but here's what's going on.  I'm giving a clinic on the "battleship" gons of the three Pochahontas railroads at the C&O Modelers Meet next weekend at Hawks Nest.  I'm going to include a brief rif on the (sadly few good)models available thereof, and the several less than stellar models that have been done over the years.  The Red Ball model will be discussed, as what I believe was a model made a generation later to the same (unprototypical)pattern by Concept.  But I'm not going to give away more as that will decrease the excitement level if you get to hear the clinic at some convention in the future.  I can tell you that when Steve Summers, Al Kresse, and I started this project we thought that between the three railroads we'd be dealing with something like 6 to 8 classes of gondolas; we have identified approximately 17.  Jim N: yes, you remembered the Red Ball correctly.  Jim K; as on O scaler you're in great shape as Rich Yoder did a truly exquisite model of the Virginian gon in brass, and a train of about 15 of those would be quite impressive.   Frank Bongiovanni

Another very long shot; does anybody out there have a decent picture of an assembled* Westerfield N&W GKa "battleship" gon??  I could use the picture for a clinic.   * I said it was a very long shot Thanks Frank Bongiovanni fbongiovanni at gmail.com________________________________________
