I'm following the conversation but can't add to the instalation of DCC in the engine. My add to the conversation is only that I use the Digitrax DX123D decoder in all my engines. Yes I have found out the hard way about bare wires and fried decoders. Any more I don't even start instalation until I have all wires either cut back to no wire showing or when wiring I have shrink wrap over the bare wires in the testing faze and then when all is well I shrink. I was having problems with some of my brass engines not picking up the radio signal when I put the body over the frame. The unit would work with the body off but wouldn't pick up the radio signal when I put the body on the frame. When I went to the DX123D decoder that issue was behind me. I'm not into sound yet so I haven't tried any of those decoders. It was hard enough for me to give up my block wiring and go to DCC, one step at a time into the future.

Now just in case I would break out and get a sound decoder who is using what. Never know this old trick could be taught a new dog , or something like that.

I hate the little plugs, even if they are Deans, so I have been hard wiring the harnesses, isolating the drawbars, and modifying the tenders to isolate the trucks from the tender frame so I can use one truck for each rail for power. I cooked a Digitrax 163 decoder in January, and haven’t tried again on that engine. I’ve pathetically just run the other M as DC. Still unpainted.
