"(with some modified to propane, P)"

Ed,
Just for clearification, the "P" does not stand for "propane". It stands for "Pool" as in pool service. We had propane heat and lights on the cab long before they were converted to the "P" sub-class.
I'm sorry I can't ellaborate on what all the "P" was supposed to entail. Cabs on the eastern region were already pooled except for shifters which had assigned cabs. The C32P's arrived as is conforming to all of the "P" specifications. Once the C31's were rebuilt to the "P" spec, they now had electric lights inside, an electric flashing marker in the end center (switchable), electric marker/step lights at each rear corner of the roof (switchable), leaf spring trucks, red car body w/white lettering and a white stripe on each end of the cupola roof.
The electric lighting system was run off a battery system that was recharged by a generator pulleyed to an axle of a truck. While standing still, without a charge, the lights were on a timer, so they had to be reset from time to time. This system in the end became a problem in that they would not come on or reset.
Then, with RR/Union agreements, they were gone from the road.
