Ed King - did you work on the Clinch Valley District ? What period of
time ?

If so, I may want to talk with you for an article I am writing about
Richlands.

They did, Jim. The two E-2as used on the Clinch in the late
days, the 563 and 578, had J-style whistles, too, and they sounded
better on the Pacifics than they did on the streamlined engines, being
out in the open instead of down in a skyline casing.

I heard the 578 whistle echoing down the valleys east of Honaker
one day, and it'd make you homesick on your own back porch . . .

I think I remember the K2 streamliner whistles sounding
the same as a J, but fifty years later, I can't prove it. Jim Nichols

All,

Soundtraxx has just announced a new TSU-1000
made especially for "Southern Railroads." This decoder features seven
whistles that can be selected; these are:

N&W Class J No. 611
N&W Class A No. 1218
Crosby 3-Chime
Lunkenheimer 3-Chime
Southern Railway Single Chime
Southern Railway 3-Chime
Tweetsie Whistle (ETW&NC No. 12)

Part No. 826121, $119.00 suggested retail.

I have not heard any of these, and do not know
if this decoder is yet available.

On another note, since N&W did not operate the A
and J class locos on the Shenandoah Valley line, what whistle would be
appropriate for the K-2 streamlined locos? Is it the same as used in
the Class J? I've got several old Key brass locos to work on, and I
might was well put sound in them too!

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

whistle?

N&W passenger whistles on steam
locomotives consisted of three tones, the lowest normally sounding
around 230 cps. The other two created what musically is referred to as
a "major triad". The tuning of all three notes could vary due to
changes in the pressure of the steam passing through the whistle.
Coincidentally, the SP G4s used the same whistle. Soundtraxx offers
this whistle (as a G4) in their "large steam" Tsunami decoder. They
also offer the Frisco 1522 which is a major triad. BWL has 611's
whistle programmed into their N&W class J decoder, but the tone is very
raspy compared to the real thing, and I don't know if you can buy the
sound decoder separately. I recommend the Tsunami - or if you need a
little more current capacity, use Soundtraxx's DSX sound-only decoder
and put some 1.5 amp power decoder in parallel to run the motor.

Does any company make a Class J whistle

I realize that there are some
programmable decoders out there, too... is that a better option?
I have an HO Spectrum J and a Key K2a I
would like to install them in.
Thank you for any advice....
