Peter: The model committee was unaware of you efforts with Intermountain. The last time the committee approached Intermountain for another run of VGN BX12's the price was too high for us to make any money on the deal( over $20 each).  I have not looked at the Tichy USRA 55ton hoppers in several years for a couple of reasons. First being VGN only purchased 500 USRA hoppers new and they were the 70 ton version. Second, the VGN H6s while designed from the USRA 55ton cars were, to quote 1950's auto ads, longer, lower and wider. VGN purchased about 500 used USRA style hoppers in the later 1930s and 1940s. These cars were in the H7, H9, H10 and H11 classes. Each of these classes were different in size from the original USRA design as well as different from each other. The N&WHS is currently offering the Bowser GLa painted to represent the VGN H3 in 1928 lettering. The underframe for the GLa matches the VGN H3 within about an inch. The big difference is
that the car body of the VGN H3 is six inches longer than the GLa car body account the end supports of the GLa sit behind the end sill and the H3 end supports sit on the top of the end sill adjacent at the back side of the sill. It has been the committee's intent to offer the VGN H3 in several number sequences, then update the lettering scheme to the 1940 version and offer several more number sequences. If you have a price for the 300 Tichy cars and know if they were to be kits or assembled I will be happy to discuss a run of these cars at our next meeting in March. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. My interest in the Tichy cars was that in
detail terms they were a better match for the F&C battleships, the Proto
H-8s with separate hand rails etc. If I could have worked something out with the
N&WHS I was prepared to underwrite the project cost with repayment at no
interest from sales by the Society, but no-one seemed interested. I have
cancelled the proposal with Larry Leicht at Intermountain who needed to know by
mid February for this year's production but I'd be prepared to have
another go in the future if there is interest out there or the N&WHS would
come on board to provide a selling point and distribution in the US.
