Another interesting, and I hope, continuing discussion.  There are  already a 
few compact fluorescent bulbs
(the spiral type) which will operate via conventional dimmers.  No  doubt 
that feature will be extended across the full range of wattages to satisfy  
demand and regulations.  The 'warm-up' time, from my experience, is about  20 to 30 
seconds and may be inherent.  Both fluorescent tubes and CFL's are  available 
in different 'color temperatures' for those whose color perception is  
sharper than mine.
 
The real plus for CFL's, from the energy use point of view is that of  
providing equal brightness from only 20 to 25 percent of the energy consumption  of 
an incandescent, not to mention longer bulb life; years instead of  months.  
The higher first cost is more than offset by the energy  savings.
