Jim; That is a hard one to answer as people are going to be all over the
map on it. Some would only use a car stenciled for "N&W" if it were
completely accurate and faithfully depicted a particular class of car.
Others will letter just about anything "N&W". My own feeling is that if I
can look at a model train on my layout as it passes by, or as I run it, and
it gives a reasonable impression of what I might see on the prototype; that
is "good enough". Some of my favorite memories of prototype railroading are
from fleeting glances at passing trains. I can remember leaping out of the
car in suburban Chicagoland and sprinting to the crossing to see four or
five CB&Q E units with a long line of CB&Q, GN, NP and BN passenger cars.
Couldn't tell you the numbers on the units, or the window arrangements on
the cars. But, I will never forget the sight and sound of that train;
blaring horns, flying dust, what seemed like 100mph. No time for a picture,
it was dusk and rainy anyway, but WOW! I don't consider myself a model
railroader, I model to enjoy my interest in the prototype when it is not
convenient to be out chasing the "real thing"; so impressions are good
enough for me. On the other hand there is absolutely nothing wrong with
someone who likes to count the rivets. Dan Mulhearn; Pipestem HO Division;
