Y6b stenciling

If it was bare boiler steel there, and I suspect it was, I imagine it would have been given the old graphite-and-oil treatment. Rare was the black paint that could stand up to the heat. If it was a black smokebox, normally the smokebox was lagged with insulation.

Does any know if the Y6b should have the grey on top of the smoke box.
The only y6b that should have a complete gray smokebox was the nonlagged 2188.
All the rest were painted black except the front end [door and facing[.
