Thanks for the reply about bashing a 4-8-0!  Using PVC for a boiler is  
pretty resourceful!
 
And I am aware that brass models of the M classes have been made. More than  
20 years ago I had one. I don't remember the manufacturer but although it 
looked  good, it ran very poorly! Since then someone else has made it in brass, a 
couple  of versions as I remember. 
 
I would like to bash one using one of today's higher quality plastic models  
as a starting point. Surely more of us have already done it.
