Andy - Auville Yard at Iaeger sounds like a good prototype situation for where your fictional situation of a classification yard where a mine branch joins a
mainline. There certainly are people who could speak to it better than me, but depending on the time in 1959 you'd have had either Y5/Y6/Y6a/Y6b or like Mark said the GP9 and RS11. So even in N scale you'd be in good shape for available models. If you went back a couple of years you could use the Life-Like Y3 too (or Z1b but there's no good N scale model), but I believe they were all gone by some time in 1958. I doubt if any diesel or 0-8-0 yard switcher type was ever used there in that capacity. I've seen either films or photos of the aforementioned at Auville in that time frame. Good luck with your project.
