The ICC report contains the objective facts. As to why 14's Engineman decided to "head in" on the passing siding, reading minds is never an easy task.
When I hired (1964,) men who remembered this wreck were still working. I asked some of them about it. Some of them thought that, for some weeks prior to the wreck, the Train Orders put 14 in-the-hole for its meet with 37 at Rural Retreat... but today it was different.
