Attorney Jerome Sandermann, Esq (known on the street by his alias, "Jeff Sanders,") is again up to persecuting old people (me) with questions they cannot answer !

Jeff asks, "Is your train on a connecting track with the Sou?"

I never worked in that area, I do not know the names of the tracks or whose rules are in effect, oor what moves were typically made there ! So, what good am I ???? The best I can do is send you a selection from the 1951 USGS Topo map, and mark the spot where the photo was made.

On the PDF attachment, first find the "R R STA." The RED arrow marks the crossover the crew was shoving through (shoving in a westwardly direction, or right-to-left on this map.) The GREEN arrow marks the approximate location of the Engine.

I think the crew was delivering N&W interchange to the SOU. They had pulled down the N&W track from North Winston. The engine was close to the depot ("R R STA.") When the entire movement was east of the interlocking (the name of which I do not know,) they shoved west into what I think was a small SOU yard. As they were completing this shoving move, I snapped the photo in question.

The entire area where this photo was taken has radically changed, and even the railroad station is now gone. But the coordinates for the double crossovers shown on this map are approximately 36.092612, -80.233225, and I think this will get you within 150 feet. You can copy and paste these coordinates into the search box on Google Maps.

There are three railroads involved in this image: the N&W, the SOU, and the Winston-Salem Southbound. To make matters even more confusing, the SOU seems to have TWO yards on this map: one east of the diamond crossovers, and one west of the diamond crossovers.

I suggest you go to the US Geological Survey website which hosts all 250,000 Topo maps and revisions thereto which have ever been published, and look at the overall map (which is in color.) This link will get you headed to the map, but there are some viewing controls you will have to manipulate:
https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/viewer/#12/36.0626/-80.1873

If you cannot get to the map, or stumble with the viewing controls, I will gladly download it and email it to anyone who wishes. The map can be had as a JPG (4 megs, poor quality, not sharp) or as an 18 meg TIFF file, which I can put into a PDF file for you. Let me know.

And now, Mister Sanders, I must go down to the Old Folks Home and play checkers for the rest of the day, so you will just have to hold any further hard questions for tomor'ry ! :-)
