Y4 - what role did they play on the railroad?

Mike - A Shenandoah Div. timetable from the mid-50's is not at hand right now, but check the volume of water stations between Roanoke and Hagerstown - they were few and far between.  Hagerstown was a joint facility terminal meaning that N&W and PRR shared expenses -- usually based on volumes.  Northbound crews Shenandoah to Hagerstown would stop at the northern-most N&W tank and top off both tenders, hoping to make it back before the tenders were empty.  That reduced the N&W expense for water service.

How and where did N&W use Y4's in the mid-50's, after their rebuilds and after ACL tenders ('53), until they were scrapped in '58?
Ken Miller provided this information, seeming to indicate that N&W purchased 10 tenders from ACL.

According to Wiki, there were 8 ACL tenders purchased. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantic_Coast_Line_class_R-1

(I'm going to trust Ken's info)According to Prince, all 10 Y4's survived to 1958.
