Abram,

I enjoyed the article. The first part added some really interesting info 
re the operation of the mainline between Coaldale and Ruth through the 
old Elkhorn Tunnel. Thx for posting.

Can you share what a 'gravity battery' is/was?

Attached is a 1912 article from the Signal Engineer magazine, written by 
J A Beody, N&W Signal Engineer.  The article describes installation of 
AC track circuits and semaphores between Bridge 7 and Suffolk, and 
between Nottoway and Burkeville, and the 4400 v AC power which was 
installed to support the AC system.  From the article, it appears that 
no interlocked, power-operated switches were part of these 
installations, as they would have certainly have been mentioned in such 
an article.

Were there any earlier AC signal installations on the N&W?
