A couple of points from a connoisseur.
They weren't placed by a car, they come with the car. If your look at the drawing one box came with each PM, P1, P2 and P3 car. Why not one for the P4s? No vestibule.
This drawing is of two piece aluminum one. It has a separate top attached from the bottom with screws. There is an N&W drawing of just the top. I was hopping it would have a logo, but it only has the basic waffle top. Morton was one manufacturer but another was Mag-Liner that did make single piece castings in magnesium. Another popular style was made from stamped sheet metal.
They belonged to the car, woe be to a porter or car attendant that left one at a station.
The current Amtrak model has a much larger stamped metal top and has tubular legs.
