PM coaches were lightweight streamlined cars (series 1720-1734) and were part of the regular consist of 3 & 4 in 1954. The "coach" on the rear must have been some sort of special movement (not ordinarily in the consist) and my guess is that it was probably a PG (heavyweight), although it could be of any class. BTW: the 4th PM coach in the regular consist was a tavern-lounge-dormitory (series 1720-1722) which had been converted from coach configuration.

A follow-up question regarding the consists. I have an N&W Consist List of March 15, 1954. Train #3 has (4) PM Coaches up front, and (1) Coach in the rear. What would the difference be between a PM Coach and a Coach?

The Norfolk-New York sleeper was routed on N&W's Cannonball #21-22 Norfolk to Richmond via Petersburg. From Petersburg to Richmond the train ran on ACL tracks, but with N&W power all the way to Richmond. The train, sleeper and a coach, actually terminated in Richmond. The sleeper was handled to Washington in an RF&P train, thence to New York in a PRR train. The last timetable with the New York sleeper was April 24,1966. By the next timetable October 30, 1966 the through coach to Richmond was still running. In the April 1967 time 21-22 were gone, but the timetable showed a connection at Petersburg for Richmond via The Pocahontas #3-4, but you had to take a taxi to get from the N&W station to the ACL station. Overnight travel time New York-Richmond was 11 to 12 hours. For many years 21-22 ran combined with main line trains 15-16 between Norfolk and Petersburg. At stations where there were moves from one railroad/train to the other an average of an hour was taken up for that.

So many wonderful and informative replies! Thank you one and all! Now I understand how an NYC sleeper ended up in a consist on the video I have. With regard to the Norfolk-New York run, what was the routing from Norfolk to Washington, D.C.?

Even before 1966, the through Pocahontas sleeper and coach to Chicago were gone. When extra sleeping cars were needed on any route, Pullman would supply what was available and not necessarily one from the home road. The last N&W sleeping car inter-line route was Norfolk-New York, and I think that ended about 1964. This doesn't include the Southern run throughs between Lynchburg and Bristol.

Looking through N&W time tables from 1966, I am trying to understand more clearly the consists of the “The Powhatan Arrow” and “The Pocahontas”, and especially the sleeping cars that might be included. A video which I have seen, shows some PRR and NYC sleepers in N&W trains. #25 had a connection in Cincinnati that went on to Chicago, perhaps with a PRR sleeper? Assistance would be appreciated!
