The R-1s were counterbalanced according to one of the theories of the day. Some weight might have been removed from the main drivers, but it’s my understanding that they were never a 100MPH engine.
They did run the h**l out of freight trains, though.

When they were delivered the drivers were badly out of balance.
500 pounds of lead was removed from the counter weight on each main driver; after that they could run smoothly at 100 mph.

Back to the original question of using an R-1 on your model railroad. The answer is that it’s your railroad and you can use the R-1 any way you want to. If anyone objects to you using one on an empty hopper train,, just don’t invite them to your layout again.
The R-1s were not satisfactory locomotives. their counterbalancing was so poorly done that they could not be used in the passenger services for which they were intended. So the 80=inch drivered machines were used in fast freight service.
They were good-looking engines, though.

The short answer is no. ACL R-1 class of 12 locomotives had scrapping dates of December 1951 and June 1952 according to Prince's ACL book. According to Col Jeffries book all ten N&W Y4 locomotives were equipped with the R-1 tenders in 1953. I don't know if N&W bought all the tenders or just 10 of them. I can't remember the source, but I did read oncd that the tenders arrived in worse shape than N&W expected.

Hello all,
Do any of the old heads know if an ACL R-1 4-8-4 ever pulled a N&W passenger train on the N&W, also when the N&W bought the tenders of these engines were they delivered still attached to the engines. I have a H0 R-1 and am looking for an excuse to run it on my N&W layout circa 1953.
