The last N&W locomotive to get Class 2 repairs (new firebox) was A 1220. When I worked in Roanoke Shop in the summer of 1957 these repairs were ongoing and the engine was outshopped shortly after I left.

In response to a question from Bob Cohen, Bud Jeffries researched when the last classified repairs were performed for each class of locomotive.

Here is what he found:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: Both Roanoke Shops and Portsmouth Shop did classified repairs until
8-1957. After that date it appears that only Roanoke Shops did these
repairs.

Class Last shopping Remarks

E-2 6-1953 After 1951, only three were left; two lasted to late 1958.

M-2 8-1953 Only 21 remained after 1953; all retired by mid-1957.

M 10-1955 16 remained after 1953; all retired by mid-1958.

Z-1b 5-1956 Began retiring in ’56; all retired by 4-1958.

Y-3 2-1957 Began retiring in ’57; all retired by 5-1959.

Y-4 7-1956 All retired in 1958.

K-1 8-1957 2 retired in ’57; all retired by 10-1958.

K-2 5-1957 2 retired in ’57; 17 retired in 1958 and 3 in 7-1959.

This may have been covered before but now with so much time available I'll
inquire, just in case it has not been published or shared.

When were the LAST of each of the various major classes of locomotives
SHOPPED at Roanoke? I am referring to A's, E's, K's, M's, Z's and even J's
even though I suspect that last class of 14 has been published since it has
been in the public eye so often. I'm not including the G's and W's since
those were so few and often departed for the boneyard, as well as the S
class switchers, which largely came on board late in the game.

Is there any record of when the shops ceased doing the class repairs?

Idle minds make for the devil's workshop here.
