Mikado's were 2-8-2's......(correcting a typo). The N&W never owned a
Mikado but opted for 4-8-0's instead. N&W's M, M1, and M2 classes
constituted the largest fleet of 4-8-0's operated by any American railway.
No Virginian 2-8-2's were in service as was the case with all Virginian
steam locomotives at the time of the 1959 merger of the Virginian into the
N&W. The Virginian had 67 Mikado's total. These were divided into 5
classes: MA 6, MD 1 (built from the rear/tender unit of the failed XA 700
Tiplex), MB 42, and MC 18. There were also 4 MCA class Mike's re-built
from MC class locomotives. Overland produced a very nice model of a
Virginian MB in HO a number of years ago.
