There were the other yards and terminals in the Norfolk area and this 24,000-car figure seems high to me.  Col. Jeffries:The N&W 1948 listing of 6,200 cars was made before the Virginian merger and the expansion of the LambertsPoint yard to accommodate Pier 6. Here's an excerpt from N&W's Coal and Coke Manual  published  inNovember, 1965  -- PORT OF NORFOLK - ". . . . . Pier 6 is supported by facilities, such as a pair of eight-car thawing sheds,a weighing station with double scales, two tandem rotary dumpers which empty four of the largest coal carsin a matter of seconds and storage yards with a capacity of 21,400 coal cars. "  Yes, that's 2,600 cars shortof the 24,000 cars previously quoted.
Could be the lengthier 95-ton hoppers (H-11a and H-11b) were used as the standard for calculating storagecapacity OR maybe some storage was lost when Portlock Yard was rearranged for TOFC traffic..
One location I can't remember whether or not it was included was the ex-Virginian's South Yard.  TheTidewater RR had intentions of building their coal dumping facilities on Southern Branch south of theNavy Yard.  It didn't happen, but there were many tracks there.                                                                                                                 Harry Bundy
