Further on the subject, of when the change over was made to the larger lettering.

It was first done on the tank of several K2s, in early May of 1941, which coincides with the drawing NW-I37686, with a May 2, 1941 date. It is known to have been on 136, 128 and 132, photos show that. The lettering was a bit wide spaced, and too low on the tank, it was apparently modifed and moved up and spacing changed to avoid it stretching end to end of the tanks. The 136 may well have been first, with a photo dated May 9. 1941

I believe that was first done for the K2s for the exhibition run of the Southern’s new “Tennessean”, in that N&W wanted folks to see the name on the tank while the train was on tour over the N&W.

It was announced with a photo and caption in the N&W Magazine from June 1941, page 257.
