Jim McClellan, who addressed the Society’s convention in Roanoke recently, has passed away.

Jim was the architect of much of the eastern railroad scene of today, and is almost single-handedly responsible for NS sharing in the break-up of Conrail; otherwise, CSX and maybe some Canadian roads would have gotten all of it. This, after having a tremendous input toward the creation of Conrail during the 1970s and having a hand in Amtrak before that.

Jim was a tremendous student of railroading, a tremendous railfan (writer, photographer and painter), a tremendous model railroader, and he tempered his fantastic intellect with a humor not often found in railroading today , or anywhere else, for that matter.

He was an especial friend of mine.

The railroad scene will miss him tremendously. Please excuse me for overworking the “tremendous”, but right now my vocabulary fails me.
