Jeff,
Thanks for your reply.  The numbers you refer to are black on a white
rectangular background and they read "5.32".  I saw this same type marking
several places along the road
and I assumed they were distances from some point.  Ahah!  I just used
Google maps to measure and it shows 5.3 miles from that bridge to the
intersections with route 52, so I would be inclined to believe this marking
has nothing to do with the bridge itself.  Didn't notice any other
markings, but I also didn't have time to go over the bridges with a
fine-tooth comb.  Hopefully, I' get another chance to visit and be able to
do some more thorough archeology.
