You are probably referring to the sand pipe covers. Before them the sand pipes were exposed outside of the boiler jacket and the connection to the sandboxes were visible. Later the sand pipes were placed under the boiler jacket and the covers allowed access to the connections.

The Class A numbered 1210-42 were all built with the new arrangement. The original Class A numbers 1200-09 were retrofitted in the mid forties while the 30 Class Y-6b, numbers 2171-2200, were built having this. All Y-4, Y-5, Y-6 and Y-6a classes were retrofitted beginning in the late forties.

I don’t have any information about the unstreamlined K-2 having them. Photos may show this.

Subject: Sand domes K2 and Y6b

What is the stuff on the side of the sand domes on K2 (unstreamlined) and Y6b locomotives? Is there a drawing somewhere with dimensions? What is the purpose of it?
Thank you,
Mike Shockley
