Sand domes K2 and Y6b

Do you mean the sand pipe covers?  More correctly they were access covers to valves on the sand pipes when the pipes ran beneath the boiler jacket.  Common on Y4 thru Y6b classes.  The Key model of the K2 had them but I could find photos of only one K2, number 124, which had them.  Scale drawings of Y6b in several books show them.

  What is the stuff on the side of the sand domes on K2 (unstreamlined) and Y6b locomotives?  Is there a drawing somewhere with dimensions?  What is the purpose of it?
