Switch Terminology

Thanks.  That confirms what I thought.  I remember hearing "closed" and
"open" used elsewhere and some other terms that I can't recall.

 

I had convinced myself that "normal" and "reversed" couldn't be right
because the old Atlas switches were labeled N and R.

 If a switch is a mainline switch and  lined for mainline movement then the
switch is considered in "normal position".  If the switch is lined for a
diverging route then the switch is considered in the "reversed position".

I feel like this a dumb question, but I realized the other day that although
I've heard many different terms used in general, I don't know specifically
what terms the N&W used to describe the orientation of a switch.
