Back when the N&W was greasing bridges, I don’t think there even was an EPA.
 
Correct.  The first greased bridge I saw was on the
former W&LE in August, 1970.  The E.P.A. didn't come
into existence until December of that year.  The
bridge spanned Short Creek near Adena, OH and 
one could see colors in the water.

In addition to the "bleeding" paint, the H-11c's had
another trait -- as they began to age, the metal on
the car sides began to flake taking the painted parts
with it.  In drifting down the empty yard a Lamberts
Point,  a hard "joint" would reduce the car's identi-
fication significantly.   Harry B.
