N&W used stone ballast, but after the 1964 merger, N&W
inherited former NKP track that was laid on slag. With
on-line industries such as Republic Steel (in Cleveland),
there were economies in using slag instead of stone
ballast. But slag contained elements capable of transmitting
stray currents, and it caused many-a-signal to drop to
"stop". Harry Bundy
