Abram: There are stray currents all over the place that affect
pipelines/underground utilities and corrode them via galvanic corrosion and
many other types of corrosion mechanisms. There is a whole industry of
corrosion control and testing to support utilities and large industries,
refineries, chemicals and such. The interesting point is that many stray
currents are not 'man made'. One is a type of galvanic corrosion that
occurs when a new steel pipe is used to replace old. Since the new is a
(slightly) different alloy than the old, corrosion can rapidly 'eat up' the
new. This is one reason why utilities are reluctant to make wholesale
changes to replace old stuff. You can create more problems than you
intended initially to solve.
