The Virginian Railway was completed in January 1909 and merged into
Norfolk & Western December 1, 1959. Although approximately 75% of the railroad
is greatly used by Norfolk Southern today after nearly 53 years, surviving
structures of the Virginian are few, scattered the length of the railroad,
from Norfolk to south central West Virginia.
A giant step has been taken to assist in learning more about the Virginian
by visiting some of the surviving structures with the creation of the
VIRGINIAN RAILWAY HERITAGE TRAIL. At most of these structures, historical
trail markers are being placed with the completion target being by the end of
2012. They are all accessible for the public with permission obtainable
from a few private property owners where noted. Visit the link below for
more information.
