I sent the photos and measurements to a rail expert for evaluation. Even though the head of the rail has been milled off to give a flat surface, he reported that the rail appears to be 80 or 85 pound rail of a section identified as "PRR."

So I have three questions:
Abe:
N&W used "AREA" rail, (American Railroad Engineeers), and "PS" rail (for Pennsylvania
System ). "PS" rail had very different contours. N&W had a 10-mile test section of
155# "PS" rail on the westbound main track near Fort Gay. Understand it was taken up,
welded, and is now in service on the Buchanan Branch. Harry Bundy
